Base Jack vs U-Head Jack
A scaffolding base jack sits under the standard at ground level. Its threaded stem adjusts to level the scaffold on uneven ground. The base plate spreads load onto the ground. Some buyers call these scaffolding leveling jacks. Some buyers also refer to the base jack with its plate as base plate scaffolding.
A U-head jack sits on top of the standard. Its U-shaped head holds a ledger or beam. Use it to fine-tune height under formwork or to support a load-bearing member. Some buyers refer to these as scaffolding screw jacks.
What to Specify
- Stem diameter
- Common sizes are 38 mm and 48 mm. Match the stem to the inner diameter of your standard.
- Stem length
- Typical lengths are 500 mm and 600 mm. Longer stems give more adjustment range.
- Solid or hollow
- Solid stems are heavier and stiffer. Hollow stems save weight but may have lower capacity.
- Plate size
- Base plates vary in width and thickness. A larger plate spreads load over more ground area.
- Finish
- Hot-dip galvanized is standard. Painted or powder coated options are available.
